The first question almost everyone asks is a fair one: what is this going to cost? The honest answer is that there is no flat rate for tree removal. A small backyard tree and a large gum leaning over a house are completely different jobs, and the price reflects that.
Rather than quote a single number that would be close to meaningless, here is a plain look at what tree removal usually costs around Newcastle and the Hunter, what actually moves the price up or down, and how to read a quote so you can compare like with like.
What tree removal typically costs
As a rough guide, small tree jobs tend to sit at the lower end, mid-sized trees in a clear yard land somewhere in the middle, and large trees near buildings or power lines sit well above that. A straightforward small tree in an open backyard is a very different proposition to a tall, established tree with branches over a roof, and the gap between the two can be several thousand dollars.
The only way to get a figure you can rely on is a proper look at the specific tree, its size, its condition and how easy it is to get to. Any price you see online is a starting point for your thinking, not a quote.
What drives the price
A few factors do most of the work in setting the price. Once you know them, quotes stop feeling like a mystery:
- Size and height. Taller, thicker trees take longer, need more climbing or machinery, and produce far more material to cut down and cart away.
- Access. A tree a crew can back a truck and chipper up to is cheaper than one down a narrow side path where everything has to be carried out by hand.
- Proximity to buildings and power lines. A tree over a roof, fence or power line has to be dismantled in sections and roped down carefully. That care takes time and skill, and it costs more than dropping a tree in an open paddock.
- Condition of the tree. A dead, storm-damaged or unstable tree is more dangerous to work on and often needs a more careful approach.
- Species. Hardwoods, large gums and palms all behave differently on the saw and on disposal, which feeds into the price.
- Clean-up and disposal. Whether you want everything removed, the timber cut for firewood, or the chip left as mulch all changes the final figure.

Is the stump included?
Not always, and this is one of the most common surprises on a quote. Felling a tree and grinding out the stump are two separate tasks. Many quotes cover taking the tree down to a low stump and leave the grinding as an optional extra, priced by the size of the stump.
If you want the area clear enough to turf, plant or build over, ask for stump grinding to be included and itemised. It is much cheaper to do while the crew and machinery are already on site than to book as a separate visit later.
How to compare quotes fairly
The lowest number is not always the cheapest job once the work is done. When you line up quotes, check that each one covers the same scope:
- Is stump grinding in or out? Compare quotes that treat the stump the same way, or you are not comparing like with like.
- Is clean-up and disposal included? A low price that leaves you with a yard full of timber to shift is not really a saving.
- Is the business insured? Public liability cover protects you and your property if something goes wrong. Ask to see it.
- Are they qualified? Tree work is dangerous. A qualified arborist and a trained crew are worth paying for.
- Is the quote in writing? A written quote that spells out the scope protects both sides.
When a cheap quote is a red flag
A price well below everyone else usually has a reason behind it. It can mean no insurance, no proper qualifications, a plan to leave the stump and mess behind, or a rushed job that cuts corners on safety. Tree work near homes and power lines is not the place to chase the cheapest possible number.
A fair quote from an insured, qualified crew that clearly sets out what is and is not included is worth more than a cheap verbal figure with no detail.
