Palms look easy to deal with. No spreading canopy, no heavy side branches, just a straight trunk and a tuft of fronds up top. In practice, removing a mature palm is its own kind of job, and it is not always the quick, cheap task people expect.

Palms are not like other trees
A palm is structurally different to a hardwood or a gum. There are no large limbs to remove in sections, but the trunk is dense and heavy, and a tall palm puts a lot of weight up high. The fronds can be large, sharp and awkward, and some species carry seed pods and old frond bases that add mess and weight. Taking one down safely is about managing that height and weight, not about working around a spreading canopy.
Why people remove palms
Common reasons a palm comes out include:
- It has grown too tall for the space or is nearing power lines.
- Falling fronds and seed pods are a constant mess or hazard.
- The roots or trunk are lifting paving or crowding the house.
- It no longer suits the garden or a landscaping plan.
- It is dead, diseased or storm-damaged.
Access, weight and disposal
Three things drive the price and the plan for a palm removal:
- Access. A palm a crew can reach with machinery is far simpler than one in a tight courtyard where every section is carried out by hand.
- Weight. Palm trunks are dense and heavy for their size, so a tall palm is a serious lift and often has to be cut down in sections.
- Disposal. Palm trunk and fronds do not chip like ordinary timber, so disposal is handled differently and adds to the job.
A palm trunk is heavier than it looks. The weight up top and how the crew can reach it are what really set the price.
What to expect on the day
For a typical palm, the crew will assess the access and the drop zone, then remove the fronds and take the trunk down in manageable sections, lowering them where anything below could be damaged. The sections are cut up and removed, and the area is cleaned down. A straightforward palm is often a same-day job. A tall palm in a tight spot naturally takes longer.
What about the stump?
As with any tree, the palm is usually taken down to a low stump, and grinding the stump out is a separate step. If you want the ground clear to plant or pave, ask for stump grinding to be included while the crew is on site.
